Friends Out & About

This page is dedicated to some of the activities and events that the Friends of the Museums of Mississauga are involved in.  If you attend any of the events, we encourage you to take a moment to introduce yourself – we’d love to meet you!

Blooms & Berries
June & July 2022

Friends participated in this outdoor event at Benares Historic House. Every year Blooms & Berries celebrates historical and modern agricultural practices in Mississauga and the GTA. With the support of the Community Foundation of Mississauga grant, visitors enjoyed a variety of activities including an outdoor market, kid’s craft workshop, as well as agriculture themed food samples and interactive demonstrations. Museums also setup a stall and Friends collected food and cash donation for the Compass Food Bank.

On the Veranda

CRH – Mississauga Cement Plant Open House
September 22, 2018

On September 22, 2018  a few members from Friends visited the CRH – Mississauga Cement Plant Open House. The theme of the Open House this year was: Climate Change, Sustainable Development & Biodiversity. There were a variety of tents with very informative displays. The displays included how the plant operates , safety, environmental footprint management and much more. Many of the displays were interactive. The cheerful employees of CRH were willing to explain things at each display.

We stopped by to visit some cute visitors from Earth Rangers. We learned about the Flyway Habitat Restoration Program. There was also a very detailed guided bus tour that showed us how the plant makes the cement from raw material that are unloaded at the dock to the finished product.

CRH has been a long time supporter of Friends and we are extremely grateful for their support. In particular, we want to send a special thank you to Barb Smith, the Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator at CRH.

*Please note, any pictures attached with children were taken with the permission of their parents.

Engagement 1812
September 15-16, 2018

Attending Engagement 1812 on the site of the Bradley Museum in Mississauga was a step back into the history of life in Upper Canada in the early 19th century.  Each morning started with a flag raising at the Anchorage. There was a living camp, historic merchants  & sutlers, artisans.

Demonstrations of  military action reenacted the war that was declared between Great Britain & the United States in June of 1812.

Heritage Mississauga & Thompson’s Company 2nd York Regiment hosted the event.  A wide variety of groups attended the two day event including: The Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada, IMAC (Artillery), The Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles, The Royal Navy, The Royal Scots Grenadiers, the British Indian Department,  The US 23rd and many more. All of these groups generously volunteer their time to celebrate our history.

Each day featured several battles. The scrimmages were very well narrated.  There were also musket demonstrations, fifes and drums, authentic singers and dancers.

Congratulations to all who participated in this wonderful family event.

Congratulations Joyce Delves! Betty Ross Volunteer Award Recipient

Congratulations to Joyce Delves who received the Betty Ross Volunteer Award this year at the Credits Heritage Mississauga Awards Gala October 12, 2017. This is a volunteer appreciation award named in honour of Betty Ross who was a long-serving, dedicated volunteer of both the Museums of Mississauga and Heritage Mississauga.

Joyce Delves has worked tirelessly for more than 20 years on behalf of the Museums of Mississauga. She has chaired various committees, specifically the Gala Committee, which has fundraised over $ 30,000 for the purchase of artifacts and development of educational programmes.

In recent years, Joyce has taken over the organization of the “On the Veranda” concert series. This event takes place at Benares Historic House, every Friday night during the summer. Once again successful fundraising was achieved. Thousands of dollars have been collected through this event, which has allowed 130 buses and 96 schools in Peel to be bused to the various educational programmes provided by the museum staff, over the course of this program. Joyce is currently chair of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Museum of Mississauga. On behalf of the board she has garnered grants for further fundraising. Joyce is an invaluable volunteer for the Friends of the Museums and the Museums of Mississauga.

Skynner Cup Presentation, November 9, 2015

Friends attended the special presentation of the Skynner Cup to the City of Mississauga’s Museums.  The Cup has Canadian, Maltese and international significance and will now be on permanent exhibition at the Anchorage House.  Also in attendance were Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Councillor Karen Ras (Ward 2), Councillor John Kovac (Ward 4) Charles Sultana, Consul General of Malta, and members of the Museums of Mississauga Advisory Committee.

The Skynner Cup is a commemorative silver cup gifted to British Royal Navy Commander John Skynner by the Maltese in the 1800’s.  The Cup was given to Skynner for his efforts in protecting Malta during the Napoleonic wars from 1796 to 1815.

The Skynner family lived in the Anchorage House which is now on the Bradley Museum site, from 1830 to 1890.
